Heathbrow Simmentals

Welcome to Heathbrow Simmentals, which is based in Hertfordshire in the south east of England. Since its establishment in 1996 the Heathbrow herd has grown in to a highly successful herd based on quality female genetics and proven sires and has built up a reputation for selling bulls and females to both pedigree and commercial herds in the UK and Ireland.

We have also experimented with polled genetics which is proving to be a major marketing tool for the herd. We hope you enjoy the site and look forward to meeting you on farm or at various shows and sales throughout the year.

About Us

The Heathbrow herd of pedigree Simmental cattle was established in 1996 having ceased with milking Holstein Friesians. Having experimented with a number of different breeds in a suckler enterprise, it was decided the easy calving, good mothering and natural fleshing attributes of the Simmental were to lay the foundations of the successful Heathbrow herd.

Having purchased females at the Sacombe Summer Time sale and the Newborough dispersal, the herd grew before the introduction of Canadian genetics. In order to set the herd’s stall out differently to other breeders, it was thought that polled genetics would be the way forward. The arrival of the Canadian bred heifer AWL Starlet and bull AWL Star certainly put the herd on the map. Unfortunately Star only served five females before dying with peritonitis and never left a heifer calf, however Starlet certainly proved her worth – 17 years old she’s still in the herd!

The emphasis on polling has proved a successful path to take as many repeat buyers are now coming forward for polled bulls. We’ve used the right genetics to bring the best out in these cattle. The purchase of Hockenhull Kramer was significant at this time. His progeny, mainly polled, were of a good type with many sons and daughters being shown. A large number of sons have also been sold to pedigree herds including Heathbrow Niagra who was exported to Eire. Kramer’s calving ease of +10.9 is one of the highest in the Simmental breed and his semen is certainly recommended for use on heifers.

Other significant purchases have been from leading herds, such as Dinanean, Hockenull, Darsham and Sterling – all of which have helped shape the herd in to what it is today.

Retained breeding females have to meet the strictest of guidelines for us with emphasis placed on temperament, longevity, locomotion, natural fleshing and milking ability.

The 40-cow herd as it currently stands is Breedplan recorded and has recently joined the Biobest Health Scheme, but prior to that the herd was BVD accredited and has tested negative for IBR and Lepto and is also Johne’s monitored. A regular exhibitor at shows in the south East and East Anglia, as well as National Simmental Shows, young bulls and females are regularly for sale, so please don’t hesitate to contact us with your requirements.

Dam Lines

The Heathrow herd consists of a quality nucleus of top breeding females. We pride ourselves on sourcing some of the best genetics the breed has to offer which best suit our management ethos of easy calving, good temperament and great longevity.

AWL Starlet 8E (P)

Sire: Harkaway Mr Star 38Z

Dam:  Miss Accelerator 346B

Starlet was purchased in 1996 from the renowned Canadian herd SWL Simmentals. Our plan was to source a quality polled female with an outcross pedigree for the UK. She has bred fantastically well in the herd and her progeny continues to produce quality bulls, most of which have been sold in to pedigree herds in Scotland, Ireland and England.

At her peak in 2004 and 2005, Starlet won seven breed championships and four interbreeds, she is without doubt the matriarch of the herd. Her progeny include Heathbrow Tristar, multiple interbreed winner and stock sire at Williams herd; her oldest daughter Starlight is homozygous polled by Heathbrow Henry and was a consistent show winner, as was Heathbrow Starbright, another polled daughter by Kramer who bred Heathbrow Allstar and Heathbrow Blackstar, both of which sold to pedigree herds. Heathbrow Superstar, a King Kong daughter, bred the junior champion at Smithfield in December.

Dirnanean Sarah S8

Sire: Starline Nelson

Dam: Dirnanean Karen

Sarah was purchased in Perth February 2007 and has been shown with great success. 2010 was without doubt her best year when she took many breed and interbreed championships.

Sarah is a big framed, deep, long, modern female. A predominant bull breeder, her progeny have included Heathbrow Wizard, sold having won the junior beef breeder competition at the Royal Show to the Ravensdale herd; Heathbrow Admiral, who was sold to the Williams herd and Heathbrow Balmoral who was the National Show calf champion at the 2010 South East calf show and has been retained as a junior herd sire. Sarah has a TSI of +91 and a SRI of +82.

Darsham Real Treasure

Sire: Salisbury Challenger

Dam: Darsham Kit Kat

Real Treasure was purchased at the Darsham dispersal in Newark. She is a long, correct and stylish female and was shown with multiple success as a two year old heifer in 2006 and as a junior cow the following year. Her progeny have included the Royal Show calf champion Heathbrow Viscount, a Kramer son who also stood male champion at herts County and Suffolk Show and was retained briefly when his sire passed on before being sold to Abram Farms; Heahtbrow Winner, a Glenturk Samson son, who was sold to the Liskerett herd in Cornwall and Heathbrow A Real Treasure, who is due to calve in the spring.

Treasure's latest son is the Dirnanean Welcome sired Heathbrow Exfactor. This April-2013 born bull has been successfully shown over the summer of 2014 first in his breed class and then won junior interbreed champion at Kent Show, first at the National Show, male champion at Suffolk and Hertfordshire Shows and junior interbreed bull at South of England.

Darsham Hannadante 3rd

Sire: Brinkton Brilliant

Dam: Darsham Bess

Hannadante 3rd was purchased with Real Treasure at the herd dispersal sale in 2006 with her Sterling Flint heifer calf Darsham Smash Hit at foot. A solid breeder, she has produced progeny which have sold to pedigree and commercial herds including Heathbrow Vulcan, sold to Abram Farms and Heathbrow Amber, a polled heifer sold privately to Greasley Estate. Heathbrow Churchill has also been sold to the Knightswood herd in Hampshire.

Swallowhill females

Over the years three females have joined the herd including Swallowhill Vienna, a King Kong daughter out of the successful Whisper family and Swallowhill Rainbow, a Blackford Harvester daughter who has bred extremely well for us producing a Gretnahouse Supersonic son, Heathbrow Vancouver, who was kept briefly as a junior herd sire before being sold to a commercial herd in Norfolk and a full brother sold to a pedigree herd in Bucks.

Laube Family

The Laube family originates from German dam lines in the Sacombe herd when we purchased Sacombe Candy Laube who is by the ET-bred sire Sacombe Nosca Anchor. This dam line is known for its longevity with the foundation Laube female living until 21 years old.

Candy’s daughter Molly Laube won her first junior interbreed championship at the East of England Show in 2003. She and her daughters have bred well for us with progeny sold to both commercial and pedigree herds.

Heathbrow Wakiki (P)

Sire: Dirnanean Telstar

Dam: Dirnanean Sybil (P)

Heathbrow Wakiki was successfully show a few years ago and her dam Dirnanean Sybil also won many prizes including two reserve breed championships.

Wakiki is breeding well and we were delighted when her two year old daughter Heathbrow Duchess took national champion 2014 at Royal Norfolk Show, our second consecutive national champion. This Dirnanean Welcome daughter is the first daughter out of Wakiki and is the sixth generation polled, she is a naturally fleshed heifer weighing a phenomenal 968kg at two years old without extra feed. She is in-calf to our easy calving stock bull Hockenhull Kramer and we look forward to her calving early in 2015.

Her maternal brother Heathbrow Cantona sold to Andrew Packard, Suffolk, while another brother Heathbrow Emperor joined the Brywood herd, Derbyshire. She also has a promising April-born sister Heathbrow Francesca who we look forward to developing.
